What islands are you allowed to camp on in key west, fl?
Im trying to plan a kayak trip. We want to spend about 3 days traveling around key west. Would like to be around bahia honda but not a requirement. I want something where we can go about 10-15 miles per day of kayaking, then spend the rest on the beach or wherever there is camping.

Natural beaches are not plentiful in the Keys because it’s all coral rock. Bahia Honda is the one exception. Legal camping is only within state parks, like Bahia Honda, or if you’re lucky, maybe tiny beachside resorts. I suggest you scratch the area around Key West and get into the Key Largo area. Or better yet, make it a real adventure and hit Everglades National Park by driving to the end at Flamingo in the park, stock up at the marina, give the rangers your itinerary, and hit the water. Loaded with untouched natural beaches, open camping, and enough kayaking that you could grow a long beard before you’ll want to stop.

I want to try and do an affordable vacation by myself sometime. I am young and have little money. I discovered that Amtrak could take me to Miami pretty cheap not sure if it goes further south. Are there any safe places where I could camp out near Miami or Key west?

Hmm, not sure but you should go to Miami Social Networking though for Miami questions because there you can find people that live in Miami and will be able to answer any Miami questions you have. You should create a profile there then you can use the Miami forum to post questions and discuss things. They also have a chat room and alot more cool stuff. Its a brand new site but the people that have joined already are very friendly.

Amtrak does not have service south of Miami. Bahia Honda State park in the lower Keys has camping facilities. Via a combination of commuter train & buses you can get public transport from the Amtrak station all the way to Marathon which is just north of Bahia Honda. At Marathon you can pick up the key West bus system.

Where to camp in key west?
I want to go the key west in may and set up a tent somewhere and camp out. The idea would be to set up tent right there on a beach but I know that that is not realistic…. Are there areas to camp?
Martin answers:
Try Bahia Honda State Park, right on one of the islands, fairly close to Key West. Most of the campgrounds are geared towards RV’s.
On your way down you could stop by John Pennakamp SP and pick-up a state park listing. Or better yet, go to Reserve Americas web site, that is where all reservations are made.
As for camping on the beach, I would contact the Key West Police. I have included the police department and a list of some campgrounds.
