Nancy asks…

Float Trip/Camping in Missouri with a great party atmosphere?

My friends and I are going on our annual float trip. We can never find a place that we all like. We want something with a great party atmosphere, we are all 21 -25 and we want a place that is no more than 2 hours away from Saint Louis. We like the Meramec but we are open to other ideas, any suggestions would be great!

Martin answers:

I assume you are going down that river that has all the springs in it. Why don’t you just find a place over at Lake of the Ozarks for a one-nighter with your friends where you know you can party to some degree without disturbing others?

Susan asks…

What lake in Missouri has the most private camping areas?

Looking for a lake (preferably with waterfront sites) that has campsites that aren’t real close together so that every word you say isn’t heard by your camp neighbors.

Martin answers:

I like Bull Shoals, it is under-appreciated, which is good because there are (relatively) few people there. It is in SW MO, near the AK border. There are several good camp sites, and some decent cabins to rent as well. Plus, there is good cliff jumping there!

Lisa asks…

Where is a great place to take a family camping at near St. Louis Missouri?

We are looking for a great place to float, swim and camp. As close to St. Charles County as we can get.
Thanks a bunch in advance!

Martin answers:

There arent a lot of float streams near St.Charles county. The closest lake that we have camped by in that area is Mark Twain Lake and we have done some camping in the Hannibal area at the State Park. If you go out Highway 70 there is Graham Cave State Park which does have river access and a nice campground.
For floating you really need to head out Highway 44 toward Meremac State Park. Some campgrounds near Steelville are Garrisons, Huzzah Valley and Bass. However, on the weekends you will have a very crowded river and some of the activities your kids see may be R rated since many of the floaters are in their 20′s and enjoy their beer a lot. You can also head over to Meremac Springs close to St.James for an afternoon and feed the trout and enjoy their museums and playgrounds and picnic areas.
A really nice family campground in Hahn State Park near St Genevieve. They dont have a float stream but do have great hiking trails.
We have a neighbor who just got back from Council Bluffs which is a federal park about a 2 hour drive from here. They were raving about the nice camping spots and the lake with swimming beach. I havent been there yet but they are extremely picky campers and had all of their children and grandchildren meet them down there so I would trust their judgement.
My favorite camping spot is Bennett Springs in Lebannon Mo which has super clean facilities, trout fishing and the coldest swimming pool I’ve ever been in (they use spring water).
Where ever you go you will need to make reservations to make sure that you get a spot.

Camping in southeast Missouri for 4 teens?

My friend and I want to go camping. We live in Southeast Missouri… We don’t want to go too far from home, maybe 4 hours max. Ideas for a great campground with a nice river or lake? We’d like to go floating…

Martin answers:

I am not too sure exactly where you are, but there are really nice campgrounds in Arkansas. The ones that I am familiar with are in Heber Springs. AR. They have a hugh lake called Greers Ferry and the campgrounds are surrounding it. There is also the Big Red River there with campgrounds. Very clean and lots of activities. You can Google the Chamber of Heber Springs. Maybe closer to you is Mountain View, AR. That is a nice place to visit also. Have fun.
