Carol asks…

any ideas for easy hawaiian party food and drink?

Hiya, I am throwing a hawaiian party, do any of you have any ideas for easy hawaiian party food and drink? this party will be happening while we are camping so will have limited (ish) preperation space!! thanks!

Martin answers:

Yes!

First of all, get a nice fresh pineapple and some wooden skewers about 8″ or so long. Place the pineapple on a pretty plate. On the skewers, put bite-sized pieces of colorful fruit – about 5 or 6 depending on size – and stick one end of the skewer into the pineapple. Put skewers of fruits all over the pineapple sticking out like a porcupine. It makes a beautiful centerpiece for the table.

Then make pretty cold cuts, arranged artfully on colorful plates. You can also served a glazed ham if you have time to fix it.

You may want to be adventurous and fix a Hawaiian jell-o called haupia. You make it like you make gravy gravy, but when it cools, it jells. It consists of coconut milk, a little sugar, vanilla or almond flavoring, and a pinch of salt. Mix the coconut milk with the cornstarch, sugar, flavoring, and pinch of salt. Taste for flavor. Then slowly bring it to a boil, stirring continually. Cool in fridge. Cut in about 1-1/2″ squares and sprinkle with shredded coconut before serving. Make sure you use enough cornstarch to set.

Serve lemonade, Hawaiian punch :) , ice tea, or champaign with strawberries in the glass.

Cheap Party Food Ideas!?!?

I am having my 21st Birthday Party, next weekend. I do not have a bunch of money to spend on it, It isn’t specifically themed, I’m having it outside in a field and we will be having a fire and some people will be camping out there for the night.. I know roasting hotdogs over the fire or marshmallows isn’t too expensive, but I’m trying to think of other ideas that would work well too.. Any suggestions?? Thanks!
It doesn’t have to be very very cheap, just something affordable and isn’t going to cost an arm & a leg to feed 20-35 people!

Martin answers:

Use regular bread instead of buns for the hotdogs. Tastes the same and saves lots of $$ you can use for other things. Bring a squeeze bottle of mustard–it’s easier. Thermoses of hot mulled apple cider. (Spiked or not according to your crowd.)

Use a few packages of refrigerated crescent roll dough to make your own vegetable “hot pockets”, by making broccoli in cheese sauce, then putting a spoonful of the broccoli into the center of each piece of dough and folding it up and sealing it like a turnover and baking it according to package directions. Stack ‘em up on a big serving platter and you’ll have a veggie they can eat w/o cutlery.

Are you going to have a b’day cake? If not, bake lots of brownies.
