Betty asks…
What are some good things to do while camping with 4 kids?
There are 4 kids camping with 1 adult and we need things to do to keep kids busy. anyone have ideas.

Martin answers:
Here are some fun things I have done with my kids…
Get the kids involved in building the campfire..have them gather kindling & firewood… Let them help dig a fire pit, ball up the paper & teach them how to build the fire & about fire safety. Mine are infatuated with fire & love to throw pine cones & pine needles in the fire…just don’t do while cooking.
I always print new ghost stories off the internet each time we go, for campfire stories, each kid holds a flashlight & reads one…shinning on their faces & making spooky sound effects…LOL
Take marshmallows & roasting forks, or cut some long sassafras sticks for roasted marshmallows…or take chocolate bars & gram crackers & make smores… Hot dogs & rolls are a good quick fix for a hot snack.
Hot chocolate is good for morning & night.
Have the kids go on a scavenger hunt with a list, some things they could look for are; acorns, driftwood(small piece), feathers, ferns, wild flowers, bugs, leaves, moss, berries, pine cones & rocks. You can pair them up in teams & give a time limit…& award prizes.
Take a large glass jar or plastic if young kids…help them make a terrarium from the woods with dirt, moss, small pine trees, driftwood, rocks & some turkeyberry…it make’s a nice souvenir of their adventure
Give each kid his own disposable camera, to capture their memories
of the trip & make a photo album with everyone’s pics.
These are just a few that worked really good for us…Have fun!!!

Helen asks…
For my NorthEastern friends, where is the most kid friendly place to go camping with kids near New York?
Sorry this is not about M&D but no one is in the camping or NY section and I really wanted to get this info for the kids.
Anyone have experience with Jellystone?
THanks guys.

Martin answers:
Jellystone is a bit overpriced. There are tons of places to camp in the Catskills and Adirondacks that are cheaper and give you the camping experience. The state department of parks and recreation should have a listing on its web site.

Jenny asks…
where can you go camping in Texas with kids?
We are looking at taking the kids camping, with their tents and fishing poles. Preferably where they can swim (lake, beach), any ideas? Thanks

Martin answers:
Beavers bend state park is in OK, but very close to the red river. It has broken bow lake next to it, and my family loves it up there. We go every fall.

Joseph asks…
What’s to do when you go camping with kids?
I’m going camping with my family a couple of weeks from today. We will be staying in a tent and cooking under the night starry skies….. There is no fishing allowed on the property so what else is there to do? Songs? Stories? Games? Websites I could get some ideas? Please help! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciate! Thank you!
Yes there is swimming allowed .

Martin answers:
Campfire stories are fun. Have everyone go around and add to a story but with only five words. Then make the story go round and round. Also smores are always fun. Have the kids help cook. Too bad about the fishing. Can you swim at the campground, that may be nice. Also hiking might be fun. A scavenger hunt may also be fun as well. Oh yes, and maybe a nature collage.
