Joseph asks…

Do cheap camping stove are o.k., if I decide to just camp for a day?

Martin answers:

Just for one day absolutely. I’m not going to weigh you down with my opinions, but consider what your asking. If you only want to go for a day then why spend all the money on expensive camp stoves that you will hardly ever use, and never get your moneys worth.

Richard asks…

Festival cooking problem!?

Hi there!

Well basically, I am off to Reading festival tomorrow and have obviously left this til the very last minute but basically they have banned gas canisters and all cookers/stoves that work by using them this year to stop people blowing them up on the last night, which seems very unfair on those of us who didn’t blow them up in the first place but there we go.

So my question therefore is thus:

Where can I purchase a relatively cheap camping cooker/stove that does not use a gas canister?

(I say relatively cheap as one of my friends bought one that uses some sort of gel to run it and it cost her in the region of £50!!! And I am hoping for something a little more purse friendly than that!)

Sorry for blathering so much, any answers will be very greatly appreciated :-)

Martin answers:

Why don’t you use a barbecue stand? Gas maybe be banned ( for the valid reasons you mentioned) but chargoal isn’t right? Or if you have a source of electricity, but the singled ring electric cooker.

Donna asks…

Iso-Propyl Alcohol : Would this work in my Meths camping stove?

I normally use methylated spirits, but Iso-Propyl Alcohol (IPA) looks cheaper – would this burn the same?

Martin answers:

You will have to try it to see if it burns – never tried it before!

However Meths is quite cheap for the amount that you need to cook a meal.

I always look at things in terms of beer. A bottle of meths is about the same price of a pint of beer – so if you can drink 1 pint less in a year then you have saved enough to buy the meths!

The other way to look at is is the cost of the overall trip – If I am camping then I have to travel to the area I am going to get to (say £30 return for petrol – similar for public transport), if using a public campsite that’s another £7 a night, food might be £20 for a weekend so a £2 bottle of meths isn’t a big expense.

Third thought is that if you are showing some one else how to use the stove then it is always best to show the correct method.
